Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality
Macaws are an excellent companion bird. They are incredibly affectionate and intelligent. They thrive in well-rounded families. They can get bored easily and find different ways to entertain themselves when their owners do not interact with them enough. Macaws that aren't socialized may become aggressive and can even bite. It is essential that boundaries are clearly defined so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are lively birds that love to play, climb and interact. They need to spend at least two to three hours every day outside to keep their minds stimulated and for physical exercise. They enjoy playing games while listening to music, and learning new tricks. They love going to parks and playgrounds as well as local restaurants and bars. They are not just a great pet but also a wonderful companion for children.
These birds can be very loud, despite their love for their mate. They can also be a nuisance to people living near. They are capable of ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which can be disruptive in apartments and condos or in close proximity to children who might be scared by their roar.
This species is also monomorphic. Females and males are difficult to differentiate. Due to this the only way to reliably determine sex is through DNA testing. Once sex is established pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to master commands, phrases and tricks. This can be a long process and the owner must be patient and understand that this is a tough task. Positive reinforcement can speed up the process, and help correct any behavior issues.
Lolita's care
For years, activists have been pleading for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, marine biologists believed that Lolita might have a similar fate. However, she was never given the chance to go back to the ocean.
The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her in danger. They harm her health by making her perform for tourists, overexerting her by putting her through head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, making her lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. They also put her in a tank one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.
In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, vowed to work on a plan with a group of Lolita supporters, known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her to eventually open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary on Washington's west coast where she could stay for the remainder of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by the ocean, not an actual concrete tank.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals who bond with family members until they die. Lolita has been living in a secluded area at Seaquarium for over 40 years. People from all over the country have demanded Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. They include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

This course is accompanied by an instructional manual and an instructional DVD of Lolita teaching the System for your personal practice.

Lolita's Diet

A macaw that is well-fed in captivity can live up to 60 years old. Additionally, this magnificent bird requires plenty of space to fly and exercise.

Since her captor doesn't have to disclose the information, it's not clear what specific health issue the orca is suffering from. However, a repository of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a major factor in the death of captive orcas.
Despite the ongoing health issues, many are hopeful that Lolita could be closer to living in the wild than ever before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has pledged to removing the whale of her tank and into her natural habitat in the Pacific.
The move comes following years of public pressure, including from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a seaside sanctuary where she can swim in the ocean and even be reunited with the orca thought to be her mother. These plans came too late to save the whale that passed away on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney problem.
